Monument Public Lands Day 2019

  • Pilot Rock Trailhead 41-2E-3 Ashland, OR, 97520 United States (map)

Join the Friends of Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, BLM Monument staff, and the Southern Oregon Land Conservancy (SOLC) as we celebrate National Public Lands Day 2019!

This year, we will be working to remove fencing on boundary lands between Sky King Cole and the Monument in the Pilot Rock area. Sky King Cole is a beautiful 1312-acre private property conserved with a conservation easement held by SOLC. The fencing was first installed by the owners to keep out open range cattle. Now that the cattle have been removed as a part of the long-term restoration of the area, the fencing no longer serves a purpose and is a hazard to wildlife. By removing this fencing, we will free up the movement and migration of the animals that call the Monument home.

Directions: To carpool, meet at 8:00 am in the Rite Aid parking lot (corner of Ashland Street and Tolman Creek Road). Park at the east end, near the Rodeway Inn.

RSVP to reserve your place at this event. A free lunch will be provided for all registered participants.

Please note that this event will involve some challenging physical labor and that we will be working with barbed wire. Please come prepared. It is strongly recommended that participants check that they are up to date on their tetanus shots prior to the event. It is also important to note that some teams will be working on steep slopes and in very shrubby areas. We will be working rain or shine!

The BLM will provide tools and materials needed for this project, but participants are encouraged to bring their own fence tools if they have them. Participants will also need the following:

  • 2 bottles of water

  • Snacks

  • Comfortable, protective clothing (long pants and sleeves made from denim or other material that is not easily ripped are strongly suggested)

  • Leather work gloves (durable)

  • Sunglasses or eye protection

  • Closed toed work shoes

  • Sun protection

  • A passion for wildlife and public lands!
