The hike will begin at the Pilot Rock trailhead off of Pilot Rock Road 40-2E-33. From here, we will explore the PCT and Lone Pilot Trail, stopping at opportune moments to respond to writing and drawing prompts. This hike is an out-and-back, with an option to climb to the base of Pilot Rock on the way back. The trail up to Pilot Rock is fairly steep, so it will be an optional spur.

Hike Duration: 4-5 hours                     Length: approximately 3 miles with optional additions
Level: Moderate

On the day of the hike:

  • Bring plenty of water.
  • Lunch and snacks.
  • Additional items: Hat, Sunscreen, Walking Sticks, Camera, Binoculars, Hand Lens, Checklist.
  • Wear sturdy shoes. 
  • Any protective clothing.
  • Be considerate of the group and meet on time at the designated location. Practice hike ethics and leave no trace. Learn more.

Limited facilities. There are pit toilet facilities at the Pilot Rock trailhead.
Directions: To carpool, meet at 8:15 a.m. in the Shop’n Kart parking lot in Ashland. Otherwise, meet at the Pilot Rock trailhead at 9:00 am. From I-5 South, take Exit 6 for Mt. Ashland. Follow Old Highway 99, which parallels the freeway. Beyond the Siskiyou summit, turn left onto Pilot Rock Road 40-2E-33. Drive two miles, staying right. The parking lot is visible on the right side of the road. There is a pit toilet here and plenty of parking!
