Michael Parker will lead an ecological Hike and Learn to explore the world of the ultimate ecosystem engineer, the American Beaver, and its importance to watersheds in the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument.
Beaver populations were decimated throughout the region during the fur-trapping heyday of the 1800s, including misguided efforts by the Hudson Bay Company to eradicate beavers to discourage settlement of the west. Beaver abundance has increased since the fur-trapping era and beavers are now moving back into watersheds of the CSNM.
We will visit sites within the upper Jenny Creek watershed to observe beaver activity and the habitats they create.
